Many of you know I'm a huge Springsteen fan ( I haunted the boardwalks of the Jersey Shore growing up), and Danny Federici was from just down the road in Flemington. I saw him play many times, not just with Bruce, and though not the most technically brilliant musician out there, I've rarely seen anyone as passionate when they play and with such a distinctive style. In his younger days, he had long hair and he would just lean over his organ with his hair covering his eyes swaying to the music. He was with Bruce longer than anybody else in the band, and through all of Bruce's early bands including the legendary Steel Mill. No one defined the early Springsteen "sound" more than Danny's organ and accordian playing. My greatest memory of him is from a tour years ago, where Danny and Bruce played "Sandy" as a duet with just accordian and Bruce's acoustic guitar. It was almost literally heartbreaking.
